MMT Frequently Asked Questions

You must have a qualifying medical condition as set forth by the State of Georgia in order to be able to be certified for a Georgia Low-THC Oil Registration Card. If you are unsure about whether or not you have a qualifying medical condition, please refer to the list of qualifying conditions by clicking here. If you want to make an appointment for certification, please click here to answer a few questions to see if you would qualify.

We pre-screen all patients for certification so that, if you do not have a qualifying medical condition, you will not be able to make an appointment for certification. We do not want to waste the time and money of non-qualifying patients. We predetermine whether or not you are qualified by having you answer a set of questions. If your answers establish that you would qualify for certification, then you will be sent an email with instructions on how to prepare for a certification appointment. Also, while in the Patient Portal, you will have access to our appointment calendar and will be able to schedule an appointment.
You will need to provide us with supporting medical documentation which verifies your diagnosis of a qualifying condition, prior treatment for that condition, and a list of your current medications for Dr. Murad, the MMT medical doctor, to review prior to your initial appointment. You will need to provide identification and proof of Georgia residency (i.e., valid Georgia driver’s license). You will also be asked to complete our set of new patient forms.
The answer is absolutely! It is not uncommon for patients to be certified by another doctor or clinic and then be left to their own devices to figure out how to obtain the medical marijuana they are approved to utilize. This can be a difficult task since there are no dispensaries in Georgia. So, if you have your Card but do not know what Low-THC products to get or how to get them, then our Non-Certification Package is for you. Our medical team will identify the best Low-THC products you need to address your specific medical issues and guide you through the process of obtaining them. If you would like to make a Non-Certification appointment, click here. Prior to your appointment, you will need to provide us with a copy of your Georgia Low-THC Oil Registration Card and complete our new patient forms.

After your initial appointment with us, we will send you a Low-THC Waiver Form required by the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) to be completed and notarized. Once we receive your notarized form, your information will be entered in the DPH Low-THC Registry as eligible to receive a Card. This is called certification. Someone from DPH will call you to verify your information in the Registry and ask at which DPH office you would like to pick up your Card. Your Card will then be printed and sent to the DPH office you requested. When that DPH office receives your Card, they will call you and let you know your Card is ready to be picked up. You will need to pay $25 to the State of Georgia for your Card. Once you have retrieved your Card, you need to contact us to schedule your follow up appointment with our Cannabis Consultant who will review your customized treatment plan with you at that time.

Georgia law requires that we monitor your progress with medical marijuana to ensure that you are receiving proper and effective treatment. Once you have been processed through our Certification Package, you will need to keep us updated on your progress. You will also need to make an appointment to see Dr. Murad, the MMT medical doctor, annually. In addition, since the Georgia Low-THC Oil Registration Card is only valid for two years, you would need to see Dr. Murad prior to its expiration date so that we can renew your Card by updating your record in the Low-THC Registry.

Once you are a patient of ours, you can contact our Cannabis Consultant any time and as often as you need for assistance with determining what CBD and/or Low-THC products you should purchase and where you should purchase them. Some fees may apply if you need to make an appointment with her to discuss evolving issues in further detail.

Even if you do not qualify for certification, you may still want to meet with our Cannabis Consultant to obtain advice on CBD products that can offer relief for your ailments. This type of appointment is called Product Advisory Services and it is for those who do not have a Georgia Low-THC Oil Registration Card and do not qualify for one. The Cannabis Consultant will discuss with you the various methods of utilizing CBD and dosing strengths to determine the optimal CBD treatment plan for you. Click here to request an appointment with our Cannabis Consultant to review CBD options.

With patients who are minors, Medical Marijuana Therapeutics takes extra precautionary measures and follows protocols specifically designed to protect their health and well-being. Parents or legal guardians of patients under 18 years old can apply for the Low-THC Oil Registration Card if their minor child has a severe case of at least one of the qualifying medical conditions specified by the State of Georgia. Medical documentation must be provided that verifies the severe diagnosis of the qualifying disease. Since there are potential risks to minors taking medical marijuana, Dr. Murad, the MMT medical doctor, will review all medical records to determine whether there is enough benefit to the minor child in taking medical marijuana to offset the risks. If she feels comfortable with certifying the minor child, the parents or guardians will be registered as caregivers and each will receive a Low-THC Oil Registration Card for the minor child.

Patients under 18 years of age, who have disorders that do not qualify for certification, may want to consider utilizing the safe and superior-quality CBD products sold by Medical Marijuana Therapeutics. These CBD products can be effective treatment for many medical issues people have that are not qualifying for the Card and can pose less risks to minor patients than medical marijuana which can contain up to 5% of THC. To discuss these options with our Cannabis Consultant, click here to request an appointment.

Medical Marijuana Therapeutics does not accept cash or a check but does accept credit or debit card payments through Square and Venmo. Payment is expected at least 30 minutes prior to the time of your appointment. If you need a payment plan, we can set one up for you.

If you select either the Certification Package or the Non-Certification Package and would like to make an appointment with Dr. Murad, you can do so when in the Patient Portal. You will need to pay $50 to reserve the appointment using any of the methods we accept (Square or Venmo). You can cancel the appointment with at least 24-hour notice to receive a full refund. Cancellations received less than 24 hours before the appointment or no shows for the appointment will result in forfeiting the $50 appointment fee. The $50 appointment fee will be subtracted from the total amount due at the time of your appointment with Dr. Murad.

If you select the Product Advisory Services option, you will need to pay $25 to reserve the appointment with the Cannabis Consultant which is fully refundable if you cancel the appointment with at least 24-hour notice. Cancellations received less than 24 hours before the appointment or no shows for the appointment will result in forfeiting the $25 appointment fee. The $25 appointment fee will be subtracted from the total amount due at the time of your appointment with the Cannabis Consultant.

Unfortunately, marijuana is still federally illegal so health insurance companies have elected to not cover doctor consultations regarding medical marijuana or medical marijuana treatments themselves. Therefore, full payment is expected at the time of service or partial payment if you are on a payment plan.

You will have several ways to provide Medical Marijuana Therapeutics with your health records. You can mail them to us through the post office or you can upload them in our Patient Portal to a secure server, both of which are 100% HIPAA compliant. Any personal medical information provided is protected and completely safe. Under normal circumstances, it would be a HIPAA violation to send health records to us via email. However, due to COVID-19, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a notice to the public that it would longer exercise its Notification of Enforcement Discretion to enable doctors to conduct patient exams via telemedicine. It is currently not a violation to email personal medical documents. If you decide to email any medical documentation to us, you will be asked to sign a HIPAA Waiver form prior to sending them.

The certification information about you is entered into a Low-THC Registry controlled by the State of Georgia. This data is stored in a Georgia Department of Public Health database which is not controlled by Medical Marijuana Therapeutics. Therefore, we cannot attest to the adherence of HIPAA regulations by the State.

Georgia Department of Public Health

DPH Frequently Asked Questions

Georgia’s medical marijuana law allows certain qualified persons to legally possess up to 20 fluid ounces of “low THC oil,” which is derived from the marijuana plant. It authorizes the Georgia Department of Public Health to issue a “Low-THC Oil Registration Card” to qualified persons, which will prove that they are authorized to have the oil and protect them from arrest.

Georgia’s law is much more limited than some other states’ medical marijuana laws. For example, it does not legalize the sale or possession of marijuana in leaf form and it does not authorize the production or sale of food products infused with low THC oil or the ingestion of low THC oil through vapor. It does not authorize physicians to prescribe marijuana for medical use. It is intended solely to protect qualified persons from criminal prosecution for possessing low THC oil for medicinal purposes.

There are three categories of persons who may apply for the card:

  1. An adult who has one or more of the diseases specified in the law, and who is a resident of the state of Georgia;
  2. Legal guardian of an adult who has one or more of the diseases specified in the law, and who is a resident of the state of Georgia;
  3. Parents or legal guardians of a minor child who has one or more of the diseases specified in the law, and is a resident of the state of Georgia or was born in Georgia.

The law lists the following conditions and diseases which qualify for the Low-THC Oil Registry:
– Cancer, when such diagnosis is end stage or the treatment produces related wasting illness or recalcitrant nausea and vomiting
– Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, when such diagnosis is severe or end stage
– Seizure disorders related to diagnosis of epilepsy or trauma related head injuries
– Multiple sclerosis, when such diagnosis is severe or end stage
– Crohn’s disease
– Mitochondrial disease
– Parkinson’s disease, when such diagnosis is severe or end stage
– Sickle cell disease, when such diagnosis is severe or end stage
– Tourette’s syndrome, when such syndrome is diagnosed as severe
– Autism spectrum disorder, when (a) patient is 18 years of age or more, or (b) -patient is less than 18 years of age and diagnosed with severe autism
– Epidermolysis bullosa
– Alzheimer’s disease, when such disease is severe or end stage
– AIDS when such syndrome is severe or end stage
– Peripheral neuropathy, when symptoms are severe or end stage
– Patient is in hospice program, either as inpatient or outpatient
– Intractable pain
– Post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from direct exposure to or witnessing of a trauma for a patient who is at least 18 years of age

If there is more than one parent or legal guardian, then each may apply for a separate card.

The application is actually sent in by the physician who is treating the patient or by a physician who can verify a qualifying condition by examining the patient and reviewing the patient’s medical records. There are two forms that must be completed. First, there is a waiver form which must be signed by both the applicant and the physician. Second, there is a physician certification form. The physician will keep the original waiver and certification form in the patient’s medical records. You may request a copy. The physician will electronically submit the information from these forms to the Georgia Department of Public Health, which will review the information and create a Low-THC Oil Registration Card for qualified applicants.

You will be notified when your card has been printed. A representative from DPH’s Office of Vital Records will contact you to establish which of 20 Public Health Offices across the state is most convenient for you to pick up your card. A representative from the Public Health Office selected will notify you when your card is available for pick-up.

The fee for a Low-THC Registration Card is $25 per new card, which is the standard fee used by the Office of Vital Records. You will be asked to pay for your card when you pick it up from the closest of the 20 Public Health Offices approved to distribute them.

The card will be valid for two years from the date it is issued. The expiration date will be printed on the front of the card. After that time, you will need to again consult with your physician and request that they update and confirm your information into the registry. Please plan to allow 15 business days to process your information, print your card and have it ready for pick-up from the closest of the 20 Public Health Offices approved to distribute them to the address you list as your residence in the registry.

If you lose your card, please contact the State Office of Vital Records at 404-679-4702 option 4. If your card has not expired, your physician will be contacted to confirm you are still under their care. Once confirmed, a replacement card will be provided to you. Please plan to allow 15 business days to process your information, print your card and have it ready for pick-up at your closest Public Health Office. Replacement cards will cost $25.

If the information on your card is wrong or outdated, please contact the State Office of Vital Records at 404-679-4702 option 4. Vital Records will verify the information provided by your physician on your order. If the information on the order is incorrect, you will need to contact your physician and ask that they update the information. At that time a new card will be issued.

Cards can be laminated; however, a card is void if any changes are made to it.

Under House Bill 324, the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission, which is administratively assigned to the Secretary of State’s Office, will oversee the growing, manufacturing, and dispensing of low THC oil in Georgia. The Georgia Department of Public Health does not prescribe or dispense low THC oil.

No. The law only authorizes the legal possession of up to 20 fluid ounces of low THC oil by qualified persons. It does not make the sale or possession of all types of marijuana legal in Georgia. Possession of any form of marijuana by an unauthorized person is and remains a violation of state and federal law.

The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission will issue a limited number of licenses for the growing, manufacturing, and dispensing of low THC oil in Georgia. It is a violation of state and federal law for unauthorized persons to sell any form of marijuana.
